In the heart of Plateau State, Nigeria, a young girl named Pauline Kedem Tallen was born on January 8, 1959. From a tender age, Pauline demonstrated an unwavering commitment to service and leadership, a trait that would later define her illustrious career.

Growing up in Shendam, Plateau State, Pauline pursued her early education with a passion for learning and a drive to make a difference. She completed her primary and secondary education with outstanding results, eventually earning a Bachelor of Social Science degree from the University of Jos in 1982. Her academic journey didn’t stop there; she later attended the prestigious Harvard University Programme for Strategic Public Sector Negotiations, further honing her skills in governance and leadership.

Pauline’s career began in the public service sector, where she quickly rose through the ranks. In 1976, she joined the Shendam Local Government Council, marking the start of a long and impactful journey in public service. Her dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed, and by 1994, she was appointed Commissioner for Social Development, Youth, Sports & Culture in Plateau State. Her tenure was marked by numerous initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the youth and promoting cultural heritage.

In 1999, Pauline Tallen shattered a significant glass ceiling by becoming the first woman appointed as Minister of State for Science and Technology in Nigeria. This historic appointment by President Olusegun Obasanjo was a testament to her exceptional capabilities and the trust placed in her to lead a critical sector in Nigeria’s development. During her tenure, she spearheaded various initiatives that advanced science and technology, leaving a lasting impact on the sector.

Pauline’s political journey reached new heights in 2007 when she was elected as the Deputy Governor of Plateau State, making her the first woman to hold such a position in northern Nigeria. Her tenure as Deputy Governor was characterized by her relentless pursuit of development and her advocacy for women’s rights and social justice.

In 2011, Pauline made a bold move by running for the gubernatorial seat of Plateau State under the Labour Party. Although she did not win, her campaign highlighted her commitment to bringing change and her readiness to take on new challenges for the betterment of her state.

Her contributions to national development did not go unnoticed. In 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari appointed her as the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development. In this role, Pauline has continued to champion the rights of women and children, pushing for policies that promote gender equality and social justice. Her efforts have not only empowered women across Nigeria but have also earned her national and international recognition.
